November 19 to 25 is the week of Italian cuisine in the world. The focus for 2018 will be on the Mediterranean kitchen, paying particular attention to cultural aspects of the traditions and ingredients of the territory.

Antonio leads a tour in Italy every year. Each year follows a different itinerary, and visits many interesting places. It includes such things as demonstration dinners, cooking classes, winery, chocolatier, and cheese visits and tastings, classic Italian dinners, relaxation, shopping, and beauty.
The 2018 tour has just finished, and the 2019 itinerary is available on request from Miriam. The 2019 tour will be in May, and will include Parma, Bologna, Chianti region, a long stay in Sicily (with a very interesting excursion to Etna produce), and will finish as always in Antonio’s hometown of Massalubrense on the Amalfi Coast.
The tours are very personal to Antonio, and every year he gets to know each guest to give them a personal and memorable experience. His aim is to show the places he loves to the people he loves, and share Italy with New Zealand.
La Bella Italia will be offering a set menu for WOW diners from Wednesday the 26th of September through to Sunday the 14th of October.

Bufala d’Estate – Roasted capsicum shell, smoked eggplant puree, and buffalo mozzarella

Il Mare – Crespelle filled with white fish, salmon, and prawns, served in a crayfish bisque

Primavera – Roasted New Zealand lamb with a parmigiano mustard crust, served with roasted kumara

Three New Zealand teams participated in the 2018 IBCPC Participatory Dragon Boat Festival in Florence. The opening ceremony (pictured above) was a fabulous mix of bright colours. The race was, in the words of one of La Bella Italia’s dear friends and CanSurvive Dragon Boat Team member Kiely, exciting, tough and noisy.
New Zealand’s teams came 2nd (CanSurvive), 11th (Boobops), and 14th (Abreast of Life) out of 120 teams. We are so proud of all the teams!
After the races there is a flower ceremony, where all the dragon boats line up on the water and supporters line the shore. Kiely says “this is to acknowledge people with breast cancer who did not survive. Organisers play a particular piece of music and everyone holds a flower then toss it into the water after the ceremony ends. It helps to remind me how lucky I am and grateful I’m still alive, and able to do the activities I do.”
La Bella Italia was truly honoured to host a fundraising dinner here at the restaurant in June for the CanSurvive Team, and we can’t wait to see them again when they return home.

La Bella Italia has had a year full of ups and downs. Earlier this month we were honoured and surprised to be selected among the 70 Best Restaurants with a Pizzeria in the World, a list drafted by Heinz Beck and Enrico Famà of the Ristorazione Italiana Magazine.
Antonio’s mother and sister collected the award in absentia, which was presented at a dinner hosted in Rome. They say however that he must come and pick it up from them in person.
Antonio has always been dedicated to keeping the food and atmosphere at La Bella authentic and traditional. It is because of this passion for Italy, and for food, and New Zealand that Antonio is so proud to have been selected for this list. La Bella Italia is where Antonio shares his love for Italy with New Zealand, through his food, his conversation, and his tours every year.

The IBCPC Dragon Boat Festival is held every four years under the auspices of the International Breast Cancer Paddler’s Commission – this year it will be held from the 6th to the 8th of July in Florence, Italy. It will be three days of intense program activity: demonstrations, workshops and social events aimed at awareness and dialogue within the large international community of “Breast Cancer Survivors”, in addition to the dragon boat races.
CanSurvive is an enthusiastic group of breast cancer survivors from Wellington who compete in dragon boating. This team of 26 will be one of three teams representing New Zealand at this event.
On Monday 18 June, La Bella Italia will be hosting a three-course fundraising dinner for their trip.
